The mechanical components that power a motorcycle are a little different than those powering a passenger car. New motorcycle riders can struggle to repair mechanical failures because of these differences.

Drive chains are an integral component on a motorcycle that you won't find on a passenger vehicle. The drive chain is responsible for transferring power to the wheels. If anything goes wrong with the drive chain, you could find your motorcycle inoperable.

Use these tips to troubleshoot your motorcycle drive chain when repairs are needed in the future.

1. Tighten the Drive Chain

A motorcycle drive chain needs to be tight enough to maintain proper tension but loose enough to allow the wheels to turn. Manufacturers install drive chains at a specified tension, and the chain needs to remain at this tension over the life of the motorcycle for the bike to function properly. The problem is that the drive chain can stretch out over time.

If you are experiencing problems with power transfer in your motorcycle, you may need to tighten the drive chain. A set of adjustment nuts can be found on the swingarm of the rear tire. Be sure that you adjust each nut equally to maintain proper alignment.

2. Lubricate the Drive Chain

You want your motorcycle's drive chain to move freely in order to maximize the transfer of power. This free movement can only be generated when the drive chain is flexing smoothly. Using a specialized motorcycle lubricant is a great way to address a drive chain that is becoming stiff and causing your motorcycle to stall out.

The easiest way to lubricate a drive chain is to put your motorcycle up on a stand. Spray your lubricant directly onto the visible section of the drive chain then slowly rotate the back tire while maintaining a consistent spray of lubricant. This will ensure that you coat the chain entirely.

3. Clean the Drive Chain

Ironically, lubricating the drive chain to improve functionality could be the thing that creates problems in the future. The lubricant spray is sticky. As you drive your motorcycle, road debris can become trapped by the sticky lubricant and lodged in the drive chain.

This debris starts to act like sandpaper, creating friction between the pulleys housing the drive chain and the chain itself. You will hear a grinding sound when your drive chain needs to be cleaned. If you don't clean the drive chain regularly, you could permanently damage your motorcycle.
