Deciding To Ride Competitively

Whether you're a longterm saltwater fishing enthusiast or are new to the hobby and ready to take it to the next level, getting your own boat will give you a lot more freedom to fish whenever the mood strikes you. Choosing a boat for saltwater fishing is a bit different than choosing freshwater fishing boats or a recreational boat. The following are some things to keep in mind as you shop for a boat.

Tip #1: Get the right materials

Not all boat building materials are created equal. Materials that work well in freshwater can be more prone to corroding or rusting in saltwater. While fiberglass and wood boats don't have these concerns, durable metal boats are common in saltwater fishing boats. If you opt for metal, choose one that is made of nothing less than 316-grade stainless steel. All fittings and components should also be made of stainless steel to ensure they do not rust and give out before their time.

Tip #2: Consider your type of fishing

Different boat styles are required for different types of water. If you plan to do a lot of bay or shore fishing, you need a flat bottomed boat that can be used in shallow water. These are typically billed as "bay boats." On the other hand, if you plan to head out to open water for some deeper sea fishing, you need a boat with a deeper keel that can handle the more severe conditions on open water. Anything from a convertible to a center console boat is usually considered the gold standard for hobbiest offshore fishers.

Tip #3: Fit it out for fishing

Taking your boat out for the day means having the capacity for the catches you are likely to get. Make sure any boat you choose has a large fish box. An insulated box is even better, since this ensures that your catch won't spoil before you can get it back to land. Beyond the fish box, make sure the boat is outfitted with plenty of rod holders. This way you can ensure you have enough lines in the water to make your fishing trips fruitful. Finally, any boat you choose should also provide sun protection. The UV rays get pretty extreme when on open saltwater, so being able to sit in the shade and fish is a  must.
